This three-day workshop will explore human prenatal development and how the shaping of the body expresses essential attributes of human spiritual development. The scientific method of phenomenology is used to create a synthesis between modern orthodox embryology and a holistic view of the human being. Approached in this way, the human embryo reveals who we are and what we are meant to be. Practitioners have found that comprehending embryological forces supports a holistic and biodynamic approach to healthcare because the same forces that formed the body are continuously at work throughout life, carrying the blueprint of health into manifestation. Lectures and discussions will be alternated with practical exercises such as form drawing and body movement, and course notes with diagrams will be available. This seminar is a rare opportunity to hear a world authority on modern scientific understanding of embryology who has developed a unique synthesis of this science with spiritual principles.

Topics covered will include:

• The creative principles and forces that work through the human being.
• Understanding human prenatal development by means of a Goethean (phenomenological) approach.
• Gestures of growth and development as human behaviour and expression.
• Dynamics of conception, incarnation, embodiment and individuation.
• Dynamics of birth - where do we come from?
• The organisation of the human body in space (body axes and planes).
• Phases of embryonic development as ways of being.
• The macrocosm in the microcosm of bodily organisation.
• The human body as an equilibrium of polarities and manifestation of threefoldedness.
• Man and animal: humans as adult embryos.

Course Tutor:

Jaap van der Wal Ph.D. is a medical doctor and associate professor of Anatomy and Embryology at the University of Maastricht, Holland. After his medical education in 1973 he specialised in functional anatomy. He then taught Philosophy of Science and Medical Anthropology, and developed a passion for human embryology. He teaches at institutes of Craniosacral Therapy, Osteopathy and other body-mind therapies around the world, and regularly presents his findings at conferences. "I discovered that science and religion, matter and spirit, macrocosm and microcosm, creation and evolution all meet each other in the phenomenal process of becoming human. In the embryo I can find cautious answers to questions about the meaning of existence."
