THE FLOWERING OF CONSCIOUSNESS

- biodynamic perspectives on infant brain development

* OCTOBER 2ND - 5TH 2008 *
WITH DR MICHAEL SHEA B.A., M.A., Ph.D, B.C.S.T.Dr. Michael Shea B.A., M.A., Ph.D, B.C.S.T.

This seminar will detail the three stages of infant brain development in relationship to a caregiver. Parts of the brain develop sequentially and are related to a sense of fear, the establishment of a midline and the self regulation of emotions and autonomic nervous system. The important implications of this will be explored. Concurrent with infant brain development, the cranial base continues to undergo significant structural and functional modifications for the first six years after birth. Students will learn how the cranial base is a reflection of the face, palate and pharynx. Biodynamic approaches to work with infants and children will be taught, especially the social nervous system, the suck-swallow-breathe reflex and the relationship of the attachment and bonding process between an infant and caregiver. The adult therapeutic relationship in biodynamic practice will also be demonstrated to be similar. Open to craniosacral therapists and cranial osteopaths.

Educational Objectives:

  • to study how touch is processed in an infant's brain and carried forward through life
  • to work biodynamically with the implications of Caesarian section
  • to differentiate attunement from physical contact in biodynamic practice
  • to relate to coherence in the top down self-regulation of emotions in the prefrontal cortex
  • to understand the metabolic function of the therapeutic relationship
  • to work with the external Stillpoint/Dynamic Stillness
  • to biodynamically form a body image through skin to skin contact.
